NATO
It was an organization to protect Western Europe. It also promised help in case of an invasion and it helped cooperation between the countries. The US pledged to help stop the Soviets from spreading communism.The United States was a big member because we had the atomic bombs and othertechnology. NATO today is split into two commands and has been around for 60years. Khrushchev pledged to remove Stalin’s influences from the country andhis former acts and tear down monuments. One of the big accomplishments of thiswas when he got rid of Stalin’s Cult of Personality. The Soviets believed that Sovietcountries would be able to get along with capitalistic countries with Peaceful Coexistence.

China Becoming Communist
Mao Zedong led the communist party into China. There was a civil war going on but they worked together during the war and then they went back to fighting. The communists killed off opponents in order to have lessopposition and they had certain things that would label you as against thecommunists. Mao built up his government so they took over everything and manypeople starved to death. Sheng Ki Sheck was defeated by Mao and he was forcedto flee to Taiwan.

Nixon’s Visit to China
Nixon wanted to go to China to try and help improve relations. When he got there they talked about whether China would annex Taiwan and if we could get along. While they met they played Ping Pong. They decidedthat they would be able to exist together and that communist China would be therecognized China. We recognized Taiwan as the government of China before due toSheng but it made it part of China. He then returned to the United States andit is considered to be one of his greatest accomplishments.
