Jackie went first today and he topic is the Berlin Blockade and the Berlin Airlift. June 14, 1948 is when it began. It didn’t last even a year. The causes were . The Berlin Blockade was when the SU tried to block allies access into Berlin, Germany. It was a failed attempt by the Soviet Union. Stalin ordered the blockade because he didn’t want anyone going in or out, his overall goal was to have all of Berlin, but it was split into four. After WWII Germany was split into four zones and the city of Berlin was split into four zones as well. The reason he blockaded it was because it was in his zone, so he thought that the SU should have all of Berlin. The Berlin Airlift was a solution to the supplies problem in Berlin during the blockade during the cold war. Over 2.3 million tons of supplies were flown in, in 10 months. It was the biggest humanitarian airlift ever flown by air force. The Berlin airlift was successful for the allied powers. To stop the airlift the SU would have to had shot our airplanes down.

Megan went next and her topic was NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). This started when SU became bigger threat to us in Germany, Western Europe wanted to do something. Treaty of Brussels, 1948, was the expansion of peace between GB and France. The countries that signed this treaty were, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and the United Kingdom. They wanted the US to join for our military support, but the US didn’t sign it. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed by same five countries that signed the other one along with the US, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. All of those countries are in the west and they touch the Atlantic. NATO gave military support to all who signed, they also would help to fight, military alliance was a defensive alliance. They had to freedom to get involved if they wanted to. It is still around today, it was present in 9-11. The SU had their own type of pact called the Warsaw pact. They wanted more countries to join.
