Darfur's Conflict: Started in Febuary 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movment/Army and the Justice and Equality Movement both (joined) and got hold of weapons, then accused the government of being racist towards Black Africans and liking Arabs more. The government denies that it does favor the Arabs, but it has been thought to have secretly attacked civilions with the Janjaweed.

The Janjaweed are trying to push the Blacks out of the country to obtain more of the good farming land because the amount of Desert is growning.

Random notes on Darfur:

  • Made up of about 38 million people.
  • 49% percent are African American, 38% are Arabs, and 11% are Nubians
  • Some media estimates about 350,000 people have been killed in incidents of Darfur
  • Janjaweed means ‘Devil on horse back’. The Janjaweed is a group northern Arabs collected from many tribes who ransack villages, in most cases raping women and lining up men to be shot at.
  • Survivors of their attacks are asked to never return, and others have fled to different are forced to leave Darfur in terror.

Why fight? -The Areas of Darfur are becoming overwhelmed with dry land and desert, so the Janjaweed have been trying to get the African Americans off the land that holds much of its water and good farmland. Often the Janjaweed may steel cattle.

  • Many people are suspicious and believe that the Sudanese government may be assisting the Janjaweed.
