Berlin Blockade and Airlift
--June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949
--first major crisis
--USSR blockade allies railways and automobile access to Berlin
--USSR would have to supply food and fuel; this giving power to to USSR over Berlin
--US and Britian tried to airlift supplies in
--basically split by where armies already stationed
--thought all of Germany would be communist b/c other countries would withdraw after a few years
--most in Berlin against communism
--Stalin thought Marshall Plan would help US take over Europe
--USSR stopped trains to Berlin, essentially set up blockade
--Soviets over-printed money making it worth nothing
--US set up new form of money b/c of this
--hoping blackade would force US out
--airlifted in supplies
