Today we had our discussion over the blog we did on the Treaty of Versailles. It was basically a peace treaty and helped put an end to World War II. It was signed at the Palace of Versailles. They met in a room here called the Hall of Mirrors to sign it. The allies who signed it were Italy, US, France, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. They were known as the “Big Four”. Woodrow Wilson had a plan called the “Fourteen Points”. World War I was the war known to end all wars. The treaty was a compromise about what was going to happen to Germany. France never wanted to have worry about Germany again. 20 years later Germany smacked France right back in the face. Georges Clemenceau-France. Woodrow Wilson-US, Vittorio Orlando-Italy, David Lloyd George-United Kingdom. Italy, felt that Italy was not getting the respect that it deserved, it was the weaker of the “Big Four”. They were going to split Germany into four parts but that never ended up happening. Territorial changes- Germany lost a total of 12.5% of their land. This also hurt Russia because they were first apart of the war but then dropped out, they too ended up loosing land which of course made them angry. Austria-Hungary was also affected by this. Adolf Hitler was driven by his passion to get back all of the German land. He did so. He took over lots of countries. Military- Germany was not able to have any air force, limited navy, could not unite with Austria, and could only have six ships, only able to have 100,000 soldiers. Got around the 100,000 men by training men then put them in reserve and so on. Germany could not have any military in France. Germany some how found a loop hole around everything. Finances- Germany had to pay 33 billion dollars for war damages. This affected their economy and it crashed. This made them extremely angry. When Hitler started to gain creditability and prominence he tried to over throw the government. General- League of Nations said they would not fight each other, a peace agreement for countries to get along, a world wide peace keeping agreement. Had very little power to stop anything and countries dropped out. US did not join because we didn’t want to loose our upper hand. Germany had to take full responsibility of World War I.
