Today we did blog discussions. The topic this week was Afghanistan. Afghanistan has an arid terrain and is dominated by the Hindu Kush Range that runs through the center of the country. As of 2001 the population was recorded as 26,813,057. There are also four major rivers systems that run through the country. Around 329 B.C. Alexander the Great had control of Afghanistan. After no predominant leader they had their first real leader in the 1800’s. This has been a country that has had a lot of wars fought on their ground. At around 1979/1980 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The Taliban now control about 2/3 of the country. When they took over Kabul they whipped anyone who wanted to be Islam. Men had to wear turbans and beards and women could not go to school or have jobs. Women have to wear Burqas and are seriously oppressed. They are no longer in power and now they are acting as terrorist group with Alqueida. On September 11, 2001 19 terrorist flew two planes into the twin towers killing thousands of people of all different nationalities. There was also a plane flown into the pentagon and one flown into a Pennsylvania field.
