Today Mr. Bruns talked about our next blog assignment. He also showed us how to get to the New Deal test questions on the History page. Sam was the first to go today and his topics were the Reconstruction Finance Corporation(RFC) and the National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB).
RFC
The RFC was passed July 21, 1932 by president at the time Hoover. FDR later became president and continued it. The RFC gave money to small businesses, banks, state governments and they could give out loans to people to give jobs. It basically helped give jobs to the unemployed.
National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB)
Passed on July 5, 1933. This act prohibited unfair labor practices, for example, long hours of working, unsafe conditions at work, and firing people for joining labor unions. Succesful untill 1947 when congress passed the Taft-Hartly Act, which set restrictions on unions. Kelsey went second today. Her two topics are Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) and Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA).
Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC)
Established in early 1933. Most who joined the CCC were unemployed and they were enlisted into a peacearmy. 18 through 26 year old men was the age range of men who joined. The crime rate reduced 55% after men started joining the CCC. The requirements to join were, ages 18-26, unmarried and unemployed, and you had to be a citizen of the U.S. Benefits of the CCC were... the men recieved 30 dollars every month, families recieved 25 dollars per month. The men were offered an education, they learned how to read and write. Over 90% of men participated in educational activities. The CCC built over 97,000 miles of road, over 3 billion trees were planted, kept people out of trouble, it helped the U.S. recover from the Dust Bowl. In 1939 the CCC lost its independance as an agency. The congress funded it for only two more years.
Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA)
Established June of 1938. It allowed 40 weekly hours. The minimum pay was 40 cents per hour. They decreased the hours of working and basically you could say raised the pay per hour because they set a minimum. This affected 39 % of white men. The labor union excluded women and colored people. The FLSA also banned children 14 and under from working. Had over 20 amendments. This act was succesful and it is still around today.
Amanda went today. Her two topics were FERA and SSA.
FERA
The FERA put $500,000,000 into state relief funds for the state. Harry Hopkins grew up in Iowa. The FERA was established May of 1933. It gave $3.1 billion to operate local projects. It provided jobs to 20 million people. The federal government gave out loans to people, it also gave out jobs to people.
Social Security Administration
Also known as the Glass-Steagal Act or Banking Act of 1933. Allowed the federal reserve to regulate interest rates. It was an effort to try to stop deflation. The federal reserve helps banks, its where banks bank. The Banking Act of 1933 was started because many banks were failing.
Josh also started his today. His two topics were Public works Administration and Indian Reorganization Act.
Public works Administration Passed June 16, 1933. It built the Oregon state capitol. Built bridges, roads, ect because it gave jobs to people. It was not succesful because they put $6 billion dollars into it and it didn't do very much. It did give people jobs which is a plus. The PWA basically created jobs for people that had to do with construction.
Indian Reorganization Act
Passed June 1934. The Indians got to manage their own land. The Indians weren't run by our government anymore, they could do what they wanted. This act reversed the Dawes Act, The Dawes Act tried to Americanize Indian men and make them like the white men. This Act was succesful because the Indians got some of their land back and it made some peace with Indians and white people. It is still kind of around today, they added on to it in 2003. What was the New Deal(1st and 2nd) and it's goals(3 R's)? Why did people criticize the New Deal? Why was FDR upset with the US Supreme Court and what did he do to try to solve this issue? How did the New Deal help:
