Today Chelsea was back so she talked about her assigned blog she did that was due this Monday. Then after she got done discussing it we continued viewing Planet in Peril. The setting took place in Greenland at first. They talked about how Greenland’s ice sheet was melting and what effect it will have on us in the coming years. There are monitors and GPS systems that track what’s happening on the land. Artic temperatures are increasing faster than anywhere else on Earth. The melting of the ice can cause flooding to surrounding areas. Deep wholes occurring in the ice are called mullahs. When a mullah occurs in the ice water can melt and go underneath of it which will cause the ice to push up. Even if we stop CO2 productions, Earth’s temperature will still rise. Greenland’s ice has melted so much that a peninsula has turned into a new island. This new islands name was named Warming Island. After the trip to Greenland, the cameras went to Alaska. A helicopter searched for polar bears by following their tracks. Scientist put a polar bear family to sleep so they could run some tests on them. Polar bears have a shortage on food because the climate is getting warmer in the cold places. Some have even turned to cannibalism and have started to eat each other. In 2007, 100 million square miles of ice melted in Alaska. There are some polar bears that are dying because they can’t swim the long and wide islands that have been created from the ice caps melting.
