Today in class we did some more presentations and we might be getting close to the end. There is no blog this week.
VE Day
We got control of the air over Europe paving the way for D-Day. The Soviets came at Germany from the other side and started pushing them back. We start pushing them back from the French side and they eventually get to Germany. Allies cross the Rhine on March 7 and on April 25 the two sides met. On April 30 Hitler kills himself. The new leader of the Nazi party agreed to an unconditional surrender and they had to stop military operations immediately. May 8th 1945
VJ Day
The Pacific campaign led to Allies to the Japanese main land. The Soviets promised aid and they joined the war the day after the first atomic bomb was dropped. We dropped the first bomb on Aug 6 1945, the Soviets join on the 7th, and then Aug 9th we dropped the second bomb. On the 14th of August the Japanese surrendered upon the USS Missouri. Aug 14th 1945
Why the Allies won WW2
Germany and China bit off more than they could handle, we made a lot of stuff and helped before the war, and we also had greater technology.
--America helped the other countries through supplies, there was no war on American soil, made a ton of stuff.
--Great Britain was separate from Europe but the constant bombings just made them extremely mad and they kept going.
--The Soviet Union just was huge and they just kept backing up until the winter stopped Germany.
--Germany made a lot of mistakes, ie turning on the Soviet Union. If he hadn’t pushed out the Jews he would have had the Jewish scientists that made the atomic bombs. They didn’t have a lot of defense.
--Italy just burdened Germany and Japan got the US into the war which got the greatest power in the world against them.
--We knew what the enemy was going to do but they didn’t through Ultra and Magic.
Effects of WW2
Creation of Israel for the Jewish people. However nobody in that area wants them to be there. Europe started to promote Nationalism and Pacifism was encouraged. Shopping malls started to develop. Consumer based economy emerged. United States was booming and Europe had to rebuild from the war. English developed radar (kinda) and there was a lot of progress in electronics and computers. The Nuclear Arms race started after the war. The United Nations was created to replace the League of Nations. People pushed to have international cooperation.
--Germany was destroyed. Nazis were tried for war crimes. Germany was divided into four sections which became two countries.
--Japan was also destroyed from the bombing and the two cities wiped off the map. The Emperor was able to keep power and the United States occupied the country.
--We paid the countries so that they could rebuild and not become communist.
