We went over the map more today... yours truely needs to study a little more. Today Courtney, Morganne and Shannon did their movie/powerpoint. Deforestation is the destruction and cutting down of forests and trees for commercial uses. It's a problem because we don't replace what we use. Some of the causes are logging, overpopulation, slash and burn farming, wild fires, commercial and industrial uses, overgrazing, acid rain, and dams and bridges. Some effects are it destroys wildlife homes, increases flooding, causes erosion and landslides, dries up soil, causes climate change, and loss of indigenous homes. We need trees to regulate and cool earth, give us source of paper, improve air quality, keep soil rich, prevent green house gasses from amassing, absorb trapped dust particles in the air, give us shade, and to look pretty. Examples of deforestation include Indonesia, Malaysia, Amazon Rain Forest, and other Latin America rain forests. To help with the problem, we can plant trees anywhere and everywhere, reduce reuse recycle, avoid buying products from companies that cause deforestation, donate to organizations taht prevent deforestation, help keep and build national parks, or even buy an acre of rain forest for around $67. The Brazilian government is taking more measures to crack down on deforestation. Then they showed their movie. Over 32 million acres of forest are disappearing each year. There were lots of really good, sad pictures on the video. Poor earth. :(
