Today we did presentations. Megan, Amanda, and Whitney went today and their topic was the African Front. Chelsea was in their group too but she is gone and she will present later. Of course we were having internet problems and it took forever for their group to get their presentation up. We will need to know where we fought, the major generals that were there, why we won, and all the general information about the African Front.
The African Front
The war was fought June 10, 1940 to May 16, 1943. It was also known as the desert war. It was fought in North Africa. Italy declared war on GB first. This war was really important for the allies because it was the only land based battle they could take on the axis powers. Operation Torch was the code name for the allies invasion of North Africa. The 3 naval forces were called the Western Naval Task Force. 100,000 men and 600 ships. It was on the French Norst Africa coast. 18,000 men and 80 ships land in Fedala. The major battles were operation compass-GB won, Second battle of El Alamein-allies won, Compass Brevity, allies won, Operation Crusader-GB won. GB got all of Egypt and Lybia. The allies won because they axis didn't have as good as weapons and technology as the allies. Because it was a desert they used tanks alot because they worked well, so did planes. The US got involved in this war in 1942. We wanted to focus on beating Germany and Italy in the African Front first. Stalin wanted us to invade France first because they it would force Germany into a two sided war. Stalin was upset with the US because he thought we were playing games in N. Africa and wanted us to invade France. In Russia they were losing tons of people and the US wasn't losing barely any. Thats one of the reasons the Cold War started, Stalin wanted to get us back. General George Pattan was from the US. Rommel was the German general-the desert fox, Bernard Montgomery was the general from GB.
The US Pacific Front
Sam and Alex went next and they had the Pacific Front. This started Dec 7 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. September 2, 1945 was when it ended, the Japanese surrendered. It was fought in the Pacific ocean and on its Islands. The major Allies fought, US, China, GB, and Australia. Axis powers that fought were, Japan, Thailand, and India.
