After the Philippines were taken the Filipino people urged the United States to free them from Japanese labor camps. From 1942 to 44 MacArthur supplied Filipino rebels so they could skirmish with the Japanese. They thought that they could gain independence if they were freed from Japan. The United States attacked at Leyte and destroyed the main part of the JapaneseNavy. They marched across the island with their better numbers and took it.
The largest campaign of the Pacific war was fought at Luzon where three separate landings created a pincer that cut of the Japanese and forced them to Manila. After three months of fighting the United States pushedthe Japanese out of Manila. They also took out a fortified island in Manila Bayby pumping in diesel fuel and lighting it.
Throughout the rest of the Philippines the Japanese dispersed into small units to hide in the jungle. The rebel Filipinos helped to find and take out these units. However it took until 1974 before the last unitwas eliminated. They took Mindanao which then acted as a base to launch airattacks from.
