Today we had another day to work on our powerpoint. As I read through the chapter, I continued to add more to the powerpoint and learn more. I learned that African Americans could be lynched for not following the racial etiquette rules. I also learned the definition of lynching it is killing, usually by hanging, without a trial. Lynching was usually done by a mob. I also learned that even the African Americans who had immigrated to the North faced discrimination. I learned that the were usually hired at a job ONLY as a last resort and Africans were usually fired before whites. I also learned that labor unions often discouraged black membership.Next I added more information to my powerpoint on the discrimination in the West. I learned that the railroad companies usually hired Mexican's to build the railroads because they were used to the hot and dry climate of the Southwest. Mexicans were paid less money than any other ethic group. I also learned that the were usually forced into a debt peonage and that they were crucial to the development of agriculture and mining following the National Reclamation Act. After learning more about the Mexicans I next looked over the paragraph on the discrimination of the Chinese. I learned that the Chinese were often forced in segregated neighborhoods and schools because the whites were afraid for their jobs. This is what I learned today.
