Today we continued to present on Chapter 10.Discuss the the development of the Panama CanalI learned that the France started to build a canal through South America but because there were a lot of diseases (especially with mosquitos) they gave up. The United States eventually got control of the area and were able to build it. We wanted to build it to save time going all the way around the Tip of South America. I also learned that Columbia, who was in control of Panama at the time, did not want us to get control of Panama. Panama declared its independence with the help of the US Navy and they allowed us to build the canal. The United States drained the swamps in the area to help eliminate yellow fever and maleria. It was very difficult to build because the soil was volcanic and the soil was very sandy and would just move right where they had just moved the soil.US Control of PhilippinesI learned that the United States got the Philippines following the Spanish-American War. Instead of being a commonwealth it was a territory. After we took control of the Phillipines we set up a democracy. The U.S also built roads and schools modernize the country. I also learned that the people of the Phillipines tried to gain independence. They got independence in 1946. After getting independence Japan took control of the Phillipines after the United States.Teddy Roosevelt Nobel Peace PrizeI learned that Teddy Roosevelt became the president of the United States in 1901. In 1904 Russia declared war on Japan because they both wanted control of Korea. Japan asked Teddy Roosevelt if he could try settle the war. Teddy made them form a peace treaty called the Portsmouth Treaty. I also learned that the Japanese won the war in 1905. They asked Teddy for help because they knew that if the war lasted a long time they would not win because Russia was so big. The Treaty of Portsmouth ended the war and made Manchiria and the Korean Peninsula property of Japan. Japan also got the southern part of Sakaline Island. Another thing that I learned was that Teddy won the Nobel Peace Prize for winning the war.
