Trench warfare was a type of warfare that consists of multiple trenches that are deep enough to almost completely protected troops from small arms fire and partially from artillery attacks. They are thought of basically as a stalemate because there isn't really any advantages. Trenches were basically set up to defend something so when different units of infantry came through they had a very large advantage and they would completely slaughter the enemy.Between two opposing trenches there was a space that was called no mans land because death was guaranteed if you got anywhere near this area.Living conditions in the trenches sucked. when they slept they slept in little holes dug called dug outs and the roofs were reinforced by sandbags because they could have been weekend by bomb shells. there was planks on the ground so the troops had a hard flat surface to sleep on and a sheet was hung over the end of the hole to give them a little privacy but these did nothing to protect themselves from shell splinters or shrapnel. In some trench you would walk in water that could be from you ankles to knees all day long which gave you trench foot. This is like the rinkles when you take a long bath but blisters start to form and this causes a lot of pain. Bad conditions in trenches accounted for a lot of deaths. the largest number was caused by diseases. This is theoretical daily rations for British soldiers.20 ounces of bread1/10 gill lime if vegetables not issued16 ounces of flour instead of above½ gill of rum3 ounces of cheesemaximum of 20 ounces of tobacco5/8 ounces of tea1/3 chocolate – optional4 ounces of jam4 ounces of oatmeal instead of bread½ ounce of salt1 pint of porter instead of rum1/36 ounce of pepper4 ounces of dried fruit instead of jam1/20 ounce of mustard4 ounces of butter/margarine8 ounces of fresh vegetables or2 ounces of dried vegetablesTroops were rarely hungry in the trenches except for when communication trenches were damaged and they couldnt move the food. Now here are a few weapons that were used in WW1-The Springfield bolt action rifle is one of the most popular. It was bolt action so you got one shot then you had to manually remove the empty casing.-Then there was the Browning machine gun which used the gas that shot the bullet out and pulled it back around into a piston to eject the casing, reload, and fire automatically.-Mauser rifle was another bolt action rifle but it was probably one of the most succesfull bolt action rifles in world war one.Mostly everybody in WW1 used a bolt action rifle. This type of rifle was invented by a scottish immigrant. There was multiple other weapons as well including the tanks like the Mark one (mother) was made so it could drive through some trenches and it was made longer than origonal tanks so it had better grip on the ground as well.Sources-*http://www.harris-academy.com/departments/history/Trenches/Joanna/joanna1.htm*http://www.sachem.edu/schools/seneca/socialstudies/guttman/per7/weapons/page4.html*http://www.sachem.edu/schools/seneca/socialstudies/guttman/per7/weapons/page2.html*http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/soldiers_food_in_the_trenches.htm*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trench_warfare
