Trench Warfare-It was basically when there would be this trench or like a ditch in the ground and that is where the army people would be and they would fire and anyone they could. Then there was this huge, vast area of nothing in between the trenches and that was called no-mans land. Like, if anyone went out of their trench they had a very good chance of dying. So, since it was really hard to attack they would like tunnel underground and plant like bombs. To prevent this they had like special things so they could like listen to see if people were digging. The British had like awesome digging tools and they had really good listening things.
Artillery-In the beginning of the war artillery was used in the front line to fire at the enemy. During the war a lot of adjustments were made. Like, they made it so like if a fuse hit barbed wire it would explode right away before the shell hit the mud and got buried. They made anti-aircraft guns. The weather and air temperature could be measured accurately and it would improve the way they like shot or something. Most deaths were because of artillery fire.Poison gas-In the beginning Germany had like really good chemical production. The use of poison was banned in like 1899 and 1907 but they used it anyway. It was pretty much the only way to destroy the people in the trenches. Chlorines gas was used first, and then they were using mustard gas and phosgene. France and Britain then started using their own gas weapons. The first attempt of defense against gas was a rag soaked in water or urine. Then they made gas masks and it helped a lot. Gas caused over 1,000,000 deaths, but it didn’t really have an effect on the course of the war.Air warfare-Airplanes went through a lot of changes during the war. At first the only kind of airplane was like the Wright brothers plane. At first pilots would shoot at each other with handheld guns and they would even sometimes throw spears. They then put machine guns on planes. The Germans invented a machine gun that went right by the propeller so that they could fire with the way the plane was going. Planes were good for bombing trenches. Big planes were used to bomb the enemies supply base. Germany used Zeppelins which were basically like blimps. They would use these to make bombing raids on like London and British cities. Germany also made strategic bombers. This cause British air forces to have a lot of planes in the air which made them take some people from their army on the ground.
Tanks-Tanks had maxim type guns, armor plating, and their caterpillar tracks allowed them to go over eight foot wide trenches. Tanks were often breaking down and they weren’t really reliable. They were getting better but they still had problems.Flame throwers-Germany used flame throwers to get French and British soldiers out of the trenches. Germany had two types of flame throwers. They had a small, one person and they had a big, lot of people one. They got smart and had one person hold the gun and the other person carry fuel. They had a pretty short firing range so they weren’t used very much.
