The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001 as a counterstrike to the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centers. The United States launched this invasion of Afghanistan with the help of the UK as Operation Enduring Freedom. The second operation was the International Security Assistance Force which was launched by the UN Security Council later the same year to secure Kabul. The main reason for this invasion was to find Osama bin Laden and other people associated with Al-Qaeda. They also wanted to eliminate Al-Qaeda altogether. One other reason was to remove the Taliban regime from the country which had been harboring Al-Qaeda. According to the Bush Doctrine they weren’t to distinguish between terrorists or governments that would allow Al-Qaeda to reside within their borders. The CIA’s Special Activities Division and the U.S. Army Special Forces were the first to arrive in Afghanistan and were enough to quickly remove the Taliban from power. While these divisions were fighting throughout the country bombing strikes were being carried out at main targets of Taliban control. Some of these included the capital city Kabul and Taliban training grounds. At the same time Bush told media that vital supplies would be dropped to starving Afghans.About one month after the bombing of Kabul Taliban forces fled the capital in the cover of darkness. The next morning U.S. troops arrived to find only 20 odd Arab defenders left in a park who were quickly eliminated in a short firefight. This put the capital city back into the control of U.S. and NATO forces. However good the war went on removing the Taliban, Al-Qaeda proved to be much harder to remove then originally thought. Osama Bin Laden has disappeared somewhere within the country. There have also been increased levels of drug production and their activity has increased.Obama had planned to remove most of the troops from Afghanistan within a few years. However this he realized wasn’t very smart. He is now continuing what Bush started. He has now expanded involvement of U.S. troops within the country in an effort to find Osama Bin Laden.Osama Bin Laden
