The United States going to war with Afghanistan was in response to 9/11. The goal is to find Osama Bin Laden and other high ranking Al-Qaeda members and put them on trial. We wanted to give the people freedom so the US military launched 'Operation Enduring Freedom' in which we'd get rid of Al-Qaeda completely and remove the Taliban. The attack at first got the Taliban out of power, but then they slowly got back in. There's been major problems with the production of illegal drugs. I definatly think that for the people in the country to live a better life there needs to be a more stable government in which terrorist groups are not in charge.
When the attacks of 9/11 happened the President was George W. Bush. The country really came together to try and pull out of the hard time that was taking place and Bush's approval ratings went up to 90% after his speech on September 20, 2001. He started the war in Afghanistan and most people were for it because they felt that the people who did it needed to be caught and we needed to help Afghanistan be a better country for the people. After a while though people started to loose hope in Bush and they thought we were never going to get out. I feel like the war is needed and it's for good reasons. Some people saw the war as a waste of our time, money, and putting Americans lives at risk. Well freedom isn't free, and the men and women that are fighting for us knew that signing up for the military there could be a chance that they could die. Those men and women have so much pride and love for our country though that they're willing to risk their own lives to help our country.
Obama's now in office and he says that we need more troops in Afghanistan, but meanwhile he's going to pull troops out of Iraq. Obama replaced the military commander in Afghanistan to Stanley A. McCrystal. McCrystal just recently said that in order to achieve the mission in Afghanistan he's going to need more troops. Obama is stuck between a rock and a hard place now because there's no way that there will be enough troops trained and ready to go quick enough. So what I think is going to happen is that he'll bring home troops from Iraq and then send them to Afghanistan. However if he brings troops home from Iraq then turns them right back around to Afghanistan I think he approval ratings will decline even further, and we'll see more problems from Iraq.
