The two countries began important relations back in the 1950's. This is when the US might have sought more oil or decided that a Pro-US government was better than a Pro-Soviet government, especially since Iran could supply the Soviets with large amounts of petroleum and had a border with them. The relations began with a US led coup d'état that failed the first time, but worked the second time in 1953.Then all was good for awhile. The Iranians learned many things from the more modern US. They gained many universities from the US investing into Iran. Also, the US gained petroleum exports.
Then, the Carter Administration took power in 1977, and began to break relations with Iran, by condemning its often brutal regime of power with his humanitarian beliefs. Jimmy Carter kept pushing for certain humanitarian things, some of which Iran did allow to happen. But in 1979, the Iranian Revolution that took out the Monarchy and replaced it with a Islamic Republic. The Revolution included an assault on the American embassy. Carter tried to get the hostages back and failed. Ronald Reagan, a true American president, got the prisoner back on his election day. Isnt he just the best president ever? Anyways, all hopes of an another pro-american government went down-the-drain and the american Government started supporting the Iraqi's and the relations jsut kept getting sourer.
Currently, the Iranian Government is Anti-US and Anti-Israel. They are also trying to enrich Uranium as part of their supposed Civilian Nuclear program that they are saying is just going to be used for electricity. The US and Israel believe that, with the "Death to America" and other hostile sayings against them that they are going to make Nuclear Weapons aimed at their enemies. The US is not against making the first move against the Iranians, whether from a military attack or a nuclear strike, if they become more hostile, dangerous, or are making Nuclear weapons. The US will not tolerate an armed Iran, even if it means war.
