For the first time in 15 years the percentage of adults smoking has risen. In 2008 20.6 percent of americans were cigarette smokers and in 2007 19.8 percent so there was a little increase. That is the first increase since 1994. The health oficials are unhappy about this even though it may not mean anything becasue the rise is so small. The goverment knows that they can regulate tobacco by raising the taxes on it and making the indoor smoking laws more strict but also the tobacco companies are also lowering their prices to make up for the tax increase.During the 1960s the smoking rate had been dropping and it was said that every 2 out of 5 adults in america admitted to smoking reguraly. Now it is 1 out of 5, but they hope by 2010 they make it so its 1 out of every 10.21 percent was were the percentage stood from 2004 to 2006. Then dropping to 20 percent in 2007. That gave the CDC hope that smoking was going to go down a lot. They let out state rusults on smoking after calling more than 400,000 adults. West Virginia and Indiana had about 26 percent wich was the highest and Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and tennessee had a percentage around that to.Nebraka is 26th with 18.4 percent, and iowa is 23rd at 18.8. Utah is the lowest with 9.2. They have found out the the states with the lowest percentage are the ones that have lots of laws on indoor smoking and stick to them very well and they are the states that make the taxes go up the most. Health officials believe that the smoking rate will go down if they keep jacking up the prices because if people dont have any money they will smoke less.My personal opions on this article is that i am very very very happy that smoking is going down because personally it think smoking is so disgusting. It ruins your lungs it makes you breath smell bad and its just over all gross so i also hope that by 2010 it has gone down that much.
