On May 1, 1898 The Spanish American War started in the Philippines. The U.S. invaded Manilla Bay capturing the Spanish naval base that was established. It took 5000 U.S. troops to capture the base. In 1901, the U.S. bought 410,000 acres of Filipino land, which was almost half of Manila. Every year from 1907, the Philippines people would try and get independence, but that stopped during WW1, to support the U.S. against Germany. In 1919, the Philippines passed a bill that gave freedom to Filipinos, and the U.S. would give the country over as soon as a stable government was established. In 1935, Manuel Quezon was elected President of the U.S. contolled Philippines. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in WW2, the Japanese attacked Cities on the Philippines, and the government was moved to Corrigedor. Eventually, it was occupied by the Japanese. In 1946 with the re-occupation of U.S. forces in the Philippines, independence was granted the the Filipinos.Ever since 1946, the Philippines has not been part of the U.S. territorries. The United States occupied it just under 50 years.Sources:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=us+occupation+of+the+Philippines&go=Gohttp://www.mtholyoke.edu/~aefrazie/world%20politics116/history_occupation/US/US_occupation.htmhttp://www.commondreams.org/scriptfiles/views03/1117-11.htm
