Today Mr. Bruns finished his presentation.
-The Philippines were a U.S. controlled island. The Japanese were trying to take it away from us. After about six months we surrendered. The army was put on a death march from point A to point B. It was called this because a lot of people died.
-One of the reasons we won the war was because of the Navajo Code Talkers. We had like our own secret language and the Germans couldn’t figure it out. The codes weren’t written down anywhere.
-James Doolittle was a famous pilot. FDR wanted to bomb Japan. People didn’t like this idea because they thought it was stupid and pointless. This Doolittle guy was chosen to pick a few pilots and they would go and bomb Japan.
-The Battle of Coral Sea was a battle between us and Japan. We won and if we didn’t then they would have taken over Australia. It was like the first battle that Japan didn’t win.
-Chester Nimitz was the admiral of the navy. He has an aircraft carrier named after him.
-The Battle of Midway
-We new this was coming because of MAGIC. They didn’t win and if they would have they would have moved to Hawaii. We did a lot of damage to their navy because we new that this was coming. After this island hoping kind of started.
-Guadalcanal was where the Battle of Coral Sea was. It was a major island in that battle.
-The Kamikazes were like ships with a lot of people on them. They were successful in doing a lot of damage, but they didn’t really change anything.
-Battle of Leyte Gulf was in the Philippines. We were island hoping to try to get to Japan. It was a long battle. It wasn’t easy.
MacArthur was ordered to leave the Philippines in order to stay safe. He didn’t want to leave. About two years later he returned to the Philippines. He like made a really big deal about it.
-Iwo Jima has had two famous movies made about it. Mt. Sirobachi was a really big volcano and it was where that famous flag raising took place.
-Okinawa was the biggest invasion on one of Japan’s islands. We take Okinawa and it looks like Japan is going to be the next island.
-General Leslie Groves was put in charge of this project to like make a bomb. He didn’t want to be because he wanted to be the leader of all the action.
-Alamogordo, NM was the testing site for the atomic bomb. It was the first atomic bomb to ever go off. So, now that we’ve tested it, it was time to drop it in Japan. They made a plane specifically to drop the bomb because it was very heavy and no plane could carry it. Enola Gay was the pilot that dropped the bomb. Nobody knew what was going on except the very high up people. There were a lot of people that died, and a lot of people got radiation poisoning. A lot of things went wrong with the Nagasaki bomb. They almost ran out of gas, which means that they almost crashed.
The Nuremberg Trials were held in Germany and they were trials for the Germans who were like in charge of the Concentration camps.
-The Japanese were put into camps, but they weren’t bad camps. They were educated and they got jobs but they did have to leave their homes and sell their stuff.
