In like the late 1930’s there were neutrality acts that were passed. One said that if a country in war we wouldn’t trade with them. We didn’t want to get sucked into the war; we wanted to stay neutral.
Then there became the cash and carry system. It was that any country that wanted to trade had to pay cash for them and they had to come and get in on their own ship. We were not trading with Germany. At this point we weren’t really neutral anymore. We didn’t like Germany and we were trading with Great Britain.
Hitler is now deciding to focus on Denmark and Norway. His navy was hit pretty hard by the British navy. Hitler easily took those two countries.
Winston Churchill became prime minister in 1940.
Belgium and Luxemburg were Hitler’s next targets. They want to capture all the way to Paris. It never worked and they had to fight a two sided war for about three years. They were going to attack France and they thought that Germany would never get through because of this wall that they had. Germany was smarter. They knew they would have many deaths if they tried to go through the wall so they just went around and they totally dominated France.
Then they went in and attacked all of France. France eventually surrendered.
Hitler allowed the Vichy government to stay in power because they helped capture Jews.
The official French government fled to some place and created a government called the Free French Underground.
The only country that was left standing was Great Britain. Hitler then turned his attention to them. He wanted to invade them, but it was tough because it was an island. The Nazi’s goals were to destroy the Air Force and as much of the Navy as possible. Then they wanted to attack and take out as many troops as possible. Then they would invade.
They never got control of the Air Force. Hitler then decided to push bombing to night time. He wanted to scare the people in the towns so they would just surrender and give up. Ultra was a code name that allowed Great Britain to know when the ships were coming in so they knew when to attack.
