Today is Mr.Bruns day to do his powerpoint. It’s going to be a loonnnnggg day.

Vladimir Lenin was from the Soviet Union. He was the first leader of the Soviet Union. He helped get the Soviet Union out of the WWI. He signed a treaty with Germany. He believed that the people ruled the country. He believed in communism. Most of the country was common people. There was 1% that was rich and that 1% ruled the country. The common people didn’t like this and they believed that they were going to take over and the government would dissolve. That is not good because if you don’t have a government the country would fall apart. Lenin thought that he would be leader and he would put some order in the government and then he would fade away. That never happened. The strong government stayed in and Stalin came to power because Lenin died.

The Treaty of Versailles had new countries that came about because of it like: Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Austria Hungry, Russian, and Germany all lost land and they were mad and wanted it back.

  • Germany lost land surrounding them and the lost colonies.
  • Their military was limited. They were dismantled. France wanted to be very mean to Germany and punish them.
  • They had to pay 33 billion dollars to France
  • They had to take full responsibility of the war and say that they started it.
  • The League of Nations was set up and it was this group of nation that wanted to make and keep peace.

The Weimar Republic was a new government set up in Germany after WWI. It was a democracy and they never had a democracy before. There was a president that was elected by the people and the president was appointed a chancellor. Hitler was going around and he was like bad talking them. He said that the Weimar Republic was the whole reason that Germany lost all the land and money and they made the military useless so they couldn’t even protect themselves and they are the reason that Germany lost the war. He also said that it was run by Jews and the communist people. People started listening to Hitler and they started hating the Weimar Republic.

It failed because they never had a democracy and it’s not easy to start a democracy right away. They had Hitler bad talking it all the time and eventually it fell. Then Hitler took it over and became the leader of Germany.

The League of Nations failed because the U.S. never joined. We were the ones who came up with the idea, but we never joined it. The United Nations could send the army and military to scare them to stay out of war. The League of Nations didn’t have that and they would just go and say, “Hey, will you please not do that and just leave”. They would say no and then drop out of the League.

Benito Mussolini was the leader of Italy. Most of the people are Catholic. Mussolini was expelled from catholic school because he stabbed someone with a pen. He then later became a school teacher. He then became a Fascist dictator. He became this because the former leader wanted him to become dictator. This was happening because every country around them was becoming communist and they didn’t want that. Fascist is like a strong army, everything is for the country. They wanted a strong army, a strong government and stuff like that.

The Washington Naval Conference involves a lot of countries. There were three pacts and G.B., France, U.S., Japan, Italy, and China signed this. They were all about reducing naval size. They wanted to make their army smaller. They thought that when people built up there army they caused war so they decided to make their army smaller. It was a good idea but people found loop holes and it didn’t really work.

The open door policy said that there was free trade in China for all countries and it made China’s independence. They wanted to make sure that WWI was the ‘war to end all wars’. That didn’t really happen.

Hitler was born in Austria in poverty and his father beat him. He didn’t have friends and he did badly in school. He liked art and he tried to get into art school but he didn’t get in. In WWI he was wounded twice. He was gassed and shot. In WWI he finally found some place that he belonged. He felt like he was in a group of people that like him. He found out that he was a good speaker and he could get people to listen to him and do what he wanted.
