Today we finished blog discussions and then continued on presentations.
Amanda did Rosa Parks. She helped Martin Luther King Jr. with his civil rights. She wouldn’t give her seat up to a white person on the bus. She was arrested and it started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She died when she was 92.
Brandon did Muhammad Ali. He is a retired boxer. He was the first African American to win a heavy weight and he won it three times in a row. Malcolm X was the one who gave him the nickname Muhammad Ali. He was required to go to Vietnam and he refused because of religious beliefs. Because he refused, they took away his belts and he wasn’t allowed to box anymore. Five years later he started boxing again.
Shelbie did James Meredith. He was the first African American to go to a University. He applied there a lot and they turned him down because he was black. He then sued them and it went to the U.S. Supreme Court and they sided with him. The Governor of Mississippi worked really hard to make this guy not go to college. He made a law that said if you were convicted of a crime then you couldn’t go to the college and they charged him with something dumb. They then made an agreement and he was allowed to go. He had to be escorted to the college by like security people. He was shot during a civil rights movement but he lived.
Steph did Condoleezza Rice. Her parents were really smart. She went to college when she was 15 and then went to college. When President Bush was in his first presidency she was the Nation Security Advisor. She then became Secretary of State. She became the first African American woman to be the Secretary of State.
Lucas did basketball players. In the 1950’s there were three African Americans that were going into the NBA. They were the first people to be playing in the NBA. They were the first to play basketball, the first to be drafted, and the first of something else.
Now we are back to presentations.

How did the New Deal help:
banks/business – The SEC is still around today and it was successful. That is all I really got out of it because I couldn’t really hear. The SEC regulated the stock market. It eliminated fraud and it made rules and eliminated problems.
Key terms:
priming the pump- It is basically when the government takes action to stimulate the economy. It helped businesses and it gave money to the banks. It is still around today; Barack Obama passed the stimulus package.
