Today we started watching a movie about the 20’s and this is the question that Bruns would like us to answer today while we are watching the movie. What made the 1920’s roaring, exciting, and fun?-They played a lot of jazz music. It was the time of jazz. They were spending more money to have more fun. There were new inventions and it made everything better. The light bulb made it so you could work longer and better. They had radios. They had cars, and they made an assembly line. Henry Ford would pay his workers 5 dollars a day. That made more workers which made business good. Companies were raising wages so their business would be better. Some people still didn’t have enough money to buy cars so they invented credit. You would buy something now and pay for it later. Soon, everyone had cars. More people were living in cities instead of countries because of jobs and a better life. Young people would go in cars and they wouldn’t have to be chaperoned by their parents. Cars made everything better. They created the drive-in movie.Women were changing a lot. They were allowed to vote, they got to go to high school and college. They were dating, and playing sports. They wore looser clothing instead of corsets. They were drinking in public. Electricity made everything better. They had washers and dryers, stoves, vacuuming, and light. People were advertising everything. They would advertise with posters and magazines and on the radio. They would say things like “if you get a car you will have beautiful women around you”.It would take women a long time to get ready, but now there was a simpler fashion. There were better cosmetics advertising for lotions, creams, hair dye, and make-up. There were beauty contests and movies that made role models for women and who they wanted to look like. Movies were very popular and they created a fantasy world. They would show women showing a little skin, smoking cigarettes, and kissing. They were very controversial because of the things that were in them.Jazz was very popular. It was loud, and fast, just like the era. Jazz started in New Orleans and traveled up to New York. Harlem was the biggest black community in New York. There was a giant black organization and they had a black god and a black Virgin Mary. Harlem was the center of the “new negro”. The new Negro was a confident black person who had goals and stuff. Jazz drew people to illegal bars and they would drink booze illegally. These places were called “speakezies”. Bessie Smith was a blues singer and both whites and blacks loved her. She would sing about love and loss and the hardships of being black and people like that. Jazz and Blues was the popular music back then and that is all people would listen to for music.People feared that the U.S. was becoming this country of law breakers. The 18th amendment said that you couldn’t make alcoholic beverages. People started drinking less, but then bootlegging came about and people were making there own alcohol and drinking it. WWI made people hate those who were different then them. The KKK would kill people who weren’t American Catholics. They had a lot of members and they controlled 3 state governments. They had over 5 million members. The U.S. congregation limited the amount of immigrants that were allowed to come to the U.S. There was a battle in TN because they banned the teaching of evolution. They were all about god and they did not like evolution at all. There was a man that taught evolution anyway and he was tried and found guilty. There was boxing that came about. There was a huge boxing match that was going on and there was this really good fighter. There was an Irish Catholic and an American Protistant. The American won. There were so many good athletes in all different sports.Charles Linber had flown alone across the Atlantic Ocean and nobody had ever done that before. Babe Ruth was an extremely great baseball player. They were the main idols in sports and stuff like that at the time. There was so much spending especially in stock. Then the stock market crashed. Times were going to start getting very bad. This is what I learned today.
