Chapter 6 Section 1: Iron was hard to work with because it is soft and tends to break and rust. Steel is a lighter, more flexible and rust-resistant metal. Henry Bessemer was the one who came up with the Bessemer Steel Process. Pattillo Higgins was a merchant and lumber merchant. Captain Anthony F. Lucas was an experienced prospector. It wasn't until 1900 when they found investors and started to drill. After a while Anthony finally dug deep enough to get to the oil. It started to Texas oil boom. Crude oil had been used only for fuel and medicine. It was then called black gold. Edwin L. Drake had successfully drilled with a steam engine for oil near Titusville, Pennsylvania in early 1859.Chaper 6 Section 2: By 1856 railroads had extended to the Mississippi river and three years later to the Missouri river. By linking previously isolated towns and cities, new markets and industries developed.
