Woo almost Thanksgiving break!!! Yay, but my excitement was erased when I saw the comments people posted on our totally awesome cwi shirt. Wow, they are so harsh. That could've made me feel terrible about myself and I could've gone into depression. Come on man, be nice. Well now that I am now almost wiping away tears, Max, Eli and Max did their presentation on Alternative Energy's. Fossil fuesl are non renewable energy sources and are found in deposits beneath the earth. The main ones are coal, oil and natural gasses. 85% of our energy demands are met by fossil fuels. They are formed hundreds of millions of years ago (369-286 million). It was called the carboniferous period. Coal is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogren and carying amounts of sulfur.Natural gas was first discoverd 6000-2000 BC. It is used for fires, heat and cooking. Max told us about pollution. The two main examples are smog and acid rain. I learned that t can happen inside houses too. Pollution can be natural or man made. 4% of deaths each year are caused by air pollution - lung problems, cancer. Another type of pollution is water. The two points of this are point source and nonpoint source. Point source is when substances are directly put in water and nonpoint is when they are indirectly through environmental change. The main problem is sewage and litter. Land pollution is another type. It include visible litter and waste within the soil that is being polluted. Soil gets polluted by pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals from agriculture. Eli told us about alternative energy. It refers to sources that have no undesired consequences like fossil fuels or nuvlear energy. Wind energy and solar energy are examples of this. We shouldn't be so dependent on fossil fuels because they are bad for the environment and we will eventually run out of them.Becka and Justice started their project about deforestation. I learned that about 2 acres of forest are being destroyed each second. That is 460,800 acres a day. Wow, I had no idea it was that much! Deforestaition describes the process of removing trees in forests and woodlands to convert the land into other uses. Brazil, Indonisia, Sudan, Zambia, Mexico, Dem. Rep, Mayanmar, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Argentina are the top ten countries affected from deforestation. There are a lot of animals affected by it too. Some of them are jaguars, cheetahs, pink dophins, pandas, tigers and monkeys. We have to use the air plants and trees give off so we should take this into consideration. Another issue is children will never tave the experience of seeing forests and jungles and exotic animals. We will never get the forests and animals back once they are gone. It will also affect the weather around the world. I learned the UN has launched a program called UN-REDD and it will assist nine countries helping them save forests. We ran out of time... again and will have blog discussion day tomorrow.
