Today in CWI, we continued with our presentations. Luke, Eli and Max went first today. Their topics were dependence on fossil fuels/pollution/alternative energy.Fossil fuels-non renewable energy sources. Some examples of fossil fuels coal oil and natural gases. We are so dependant on fossil fuels, it's not even funny. 85% of our energy demands are met by fossil fuels. We first really discovered them 369-286 million years ago.Pollution: There are several types of pollution. The first one we talked about is air pollution, which is accumulation in the atmosphere of substances that endanger human health. Smog and acid rain are two esamples of air pollution. Some air pollution is natural, but some is man made. 4% of deaths a year are caused by air pollution. Water pollution is next. Two main contributors of water pollution of water are sewage and fertilizers. Land Pollution is the contamination of land surface and soil beneath it. This includes litter! Soil gets polluted by pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals from agrictulture use and field run offs.Alternative energies- energies that do not require fossil fuels, such as biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric. They have really low carbon emissions.Next, Becca and Justice went. Their topic was deforestation. The topics that they have are Causes/Effects? Whats being done to slow it down? Where in the world is this majorly affecting?2 acres of forests are being destroyed every second. ): Scientists think that by 2020 80-90% of forests will be destroyed to make room for cities. The ten countries with the most deforestation in order from least to greatest... and these are just the top ten!..so far.BrazilIndonesiaSudanZambiaMexicoDem. Rep. of CongoMyanmarNigeriaZimbabweArgentinaPeople aren't the only ones paying the consequences, as there are a lot of animals affected by deforestation. We should care about deforestation because it's destorying our source of oxygen! Exotic animals will become extinct, and overall, it will just change our way of life drastically, and not in a good way. It will also effect our climate. The UN is also taking action with a program called UN-REDD. It will assist countries experiencing deforestation. The UN says that deforestation has slowed since we became more aware of this problem
