Today we are continuing with Ch. 9 projects,What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?-There were restrictions in towns when alcohol could be sold. People educated others about alcohol.-Carrie Nation tried to get people to think before drinking. She sung to people. She began praying for help. She went to Kiowa and began ‘hatchetations’. This is when she ruined bars with hatches. Also, people rallied. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?-They pressured politicians to pass the Keating-Owen Law. This stated that if children made something in one state, it couldn’t be taken to another state by anyone. They also limited the amount of time or hours children could work. The maximum amount of time was 15 hours, or possibly 19 hours. Children would not fight back, create labor unions, and could do some things better so people wanted to hire them. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?-At first, they aimed to help children and women. Muller v. Oregon was when the Supreme Court decided that women couldn’t work more than ten hours. Bunting vs. Oregon was when the Supreme Court decided that men couldn’t work more than ten hours. Now, it usually is eight and sometimes nine hours. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?-Wages before the P.A. were really low and bad. Usually children were hired because they could be paid less. An adult male would be paid around $1.75 for a 14-15 hour day, and the money was used mainly for food. Progressives pushed for laws, and there eventually was a minimum wage law was in 1938. The Equity Pay Act was the act that tried to equal the pay between men and women.
