Today Mr. Bruns did his power point again. The Bataan Death March happened in the Philippines. It was the American and Filipinos death march because a lot of people died. The Navajo code talkers were a big part of us winning the war because we knew what they were talking about and the enemy couldn’t figure out the Navajo language. James Doolittle was a famous pilot in WWII. Roosevelt wanted to bomb Japan after Pearl Harbor, most people didn’t want to do it but Roosevelt did not change his mind. So Doolittle chose the pilots to fly the planes. Doolittle’s Raid is what the bombing in Japan is called.

The Coral Sea battle was one major turning in the war. We did a lot of damage to the Japanese and they did a lot of damage to us, so you could consider it a win. Chester Nimitz was the admiral of the navy. The other major turning in the war was the Battle of Midway. We knew the attack was coming because of MAJIC. We did massive destruction to their navy. After this we slowly started island hoping and pushing Japan back to their home land. Guadalcanal was another island we stopped at as we were pushing the Japanese back to Japan. The Kamikazes were Japanese planes full with explosives, they would try to run their planes into boats to destroy everything and everyone.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf was in Oct. of 1944. It was in the Philippines. They were taken over in 1942 by the Japanese. This battle was won by the US. Japans navy was pretty much destroyed after this battle. The Philippines had tons of islands and that’s why it was a long process of taking over the Philippines. We did get damaged, but they were losing things faster than us and they were losing more and the US could supply and get supplies way faster than the Japanese. MacArthur was ordered to leave the Philippines so he wouldn’t be killed. He returned to the Philippines in 1944, he made a huge entrance when he went back.

Iwo Jima was one of the most known battles. There were two flag raisings at Iwo Jima, first on Feb. 23, 1945. Okinowa was an island right next to Japan that we invaded first before taking Japan. Leslie Groves was in charge of the Manhattan Project(Code name for making atomic bomb in US). The scientist in charge was Robert Oppenheimer. In July 1945 we tested the first atomic bomb in New Mexico. The inside of the bomb is hotter than the sun. Enola Gay was the plane built specifically to drop the heavy atomic bomb in Japan. Paul Tibbits was the pilot who flew the Enola Gay. The bomb in Hiroshima, “little boy,” was smaller than the bomb dropped in Nagasaki. People burned instantly if they were next to the bomb, but if not you would suffer and just burn, people were getting sick from the radiation too. The Nagasaki bomb, “Fat man,” was huge.
