Today in class we talked a little about the Cold War project and then finished the big PowerPoint.

Big Picture

After Coral Sea and Midway we slowly island hopped toward Japan slowly pushing them back. At the battle of Leyte Gulf we pretty much destroyed their main Navy power. MacArthur returned to the Philippines. We wanted Iwo Jima for the airstrip there and wanted the only mountain on the island. We raised the flag there twice. Okinawa was the first island that was part of the Japanese main archipelago.

General Leslie Groves was put in charge of the Manhattan Project. J Robert Oppenheimer was the head scientist of the project who was a communist. The Manhattan Project was developed at Los Alamos and it was tested at Alamogordo. The first atomic device was Trinity. The Enola Gay was a B-29 Super Fortress designed to drop the atomic bomb; it dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima. The Bockscar was the other plane that dropped the Fat Man on Nagasaki and they almost ran out of fuel on the way back. After the two bombs were dropped Japan decided to surrender.

Yalta Conference said that Germany would be broken up, Stalin would allow free elections, and they would create the United Nations. The Nuremberg Trials where the Nazis being court marshaled for the Holocaust.

The GI Bill of rights was passed to help soldiers get back into normal life or get money for college. The Japanese Americans that were in America were forced to sell all of their things and move to Internment camps. They were able to get educations and be able to have sports and things but they still had to do certain jobs. After 50 years Bill Clinton apologized for it and they were given money in compensation.
