Today Ana, Chelsea and I gave our powerpoint presentation about Darfur. Next Isaac and Matt gave their presentation about Somalia. Some of the main problems that occur there are because they have no government and are practically an anarchy. Somalia is the #1 failed state meaning the country is chaotic and they have no leader. Another problem is piracy. Pirates are a threat to International trade and shipping and have received around $150 million in ransom in the last 12 months prior to November 2008. . They also like to target big oil tanks. Somalia has three main terrorist groups: Jihadis and Al-Shabaab and Al-Quada cell group which is just a branch. Al-Quada is said to be the ones responsible for the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Kenya. Jihadis are said to be responsible for many massacres and are led by Aden Hashi Ayro who trains them in Afghanistan. The Al-Shabaab have control over most of southern and central Somalia and describe themselves as enemys of Islam. In 2000, a government was established to replace their prior anarchy but the attempt failed in 2003. Next we went over the Asian maps with Mr. Bruns. The test will either be Thursday & Friday or Monday & Tuesday.
