Today in class we took two write to learns, and then Kara, Chelly, and I showed our presentation over Darfur.
Darfur: about 500,000 have been killed, many celebrities have been donating and trying to get it awarness but nobody seems to notice, the president al-Bashir doesn't allow much troops from the UN to enter.
Somalia:
- #1 failed state in the world
- Piracy, terrorism, and lack of leadership is major problems
- Many war lords are in Somalia trying to fight for power
- Piracy- a threat to an international trade and shipping
- Pirates of Somali have recieved about 150 million dollars in ransom, they are now targeting big oil tankers, exc.
- Stated in 1990's and Somalia lost control of govt. in about 1993
- Terrorist groups- Al-Quada cell group say, Jihadis, Al-Shabaab
- Al-Quada- responsible for bombing many places
- Jihadis- responsibe for many massacres, killed an Italian nun. Lead by Aden Hashi Ayro who trains them.
- Al-Shabaab, have most control over southern and central Somalia, enemies of Islam. In Dec. 2006, had thousands of members
- Their in a state of lawlessness or Anarchy
- Had a government in 2000, but it failed in 2003
We have one presentation left for tomorrow. For the rest of the day we went over the Asian map a little more.
