Today we did a write to learn. Then we continued with our Africa presentations. My group went first -- The Genocide in Darfur. Matt and Isaac's powerpoint was on Somolia. It's the #1 failed state in the world. Problems going on include priracy and lack of leadership. Black Hawk Down was a movie about Somolia. It was about the US effort to capture the Somalia war lord Mohammed Farraih Aidid. Piracy is a threat to international trade and shipping. Task Force 150 had established Maritime Security Patrol Area in the Gulf of Aden. Pirates are now targeting big oil tankers and larger targets like them. It started in Solamia in the 1900s. The terrorist groups are Al-Quada cell group, Jihadis, and Al-Shabaab. Al-Quada: said to be responsable for the 1998 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kenya. Jihadis: they are responsible for many massacres and killed an Italian nun. Led by Aden Hashi Ayro who trains them in Afghanistan. Al-Shabaab: control over most of southern and central Somalia. Describe themselves as enemies of Islam. Before government, Somalia was in a state of anarchy. In 2000 a government was set up but failed in 2003. We'll have our last Africa project group go tomorrow! Semester test blogs need to be getting done and our Asia test is Thursday! Also, last assigned blog is due on Sunday! We practiced our Asia map for a while today. I'm really nervous for this test!! :(
