WWII Project
Today we started our presentations and Megan and Amanda went first. Their country was Australia in WWII. Australia got German New Guinea, Bismark, Archiplago, and Nauru. Australia had and still has today a Federal constitutional monarchy, only for tradition. They have a prime minister, or someone who they elect to make rules. John Curtin was their leader and he didn't want to follow Robert Menzie's government beacause he thought it would split up the labor party. The two independant Mp's decided to go with Curtin and he was elected prime minister. Australia was being ruled by Great Britain, they were a colony of the British Empire. The goals of Australia in the war was only really to help Great Britain because they didn't want the Japanese to overtake them. The military strategy during WWII was whatever Great Britain did. Australia had 30 fighter pilots and 100 men. Most fighting took place in Great Britain not in Australia. Everything west of Hawaii was controled by Japan and Australia was the only place left and the US was based there. They were the base of operations in the pacific against Japan. Their allies were the US and Great Britain. WWII made Australia start having more factories and they became better friends with the US, started becoming more independant like the US and eventually came independant from Great Britain.
Lucas and Josh went next, their country was Canada. The Treaty of Versailles impacted Canada slightly, they recieved small payments from Germany due to the damage that happened in the war. They didn't get any land though. Their leader was Sir Robert Bordan who retired in 1920, Arthur Meighen took his place. In 1921 the Liberal Party took back office under a new leader, William Lyon Mackenzie King. The government was similar to Australia's. They were under Great Britain and had a Queen but she didn't have any power over them really. Inbetween WWI and WWII they tried to stay out of the was and stay isolated. The only reason they joined was because GB did. The prime minister set up scientific facilities and King tried to keep the country unified. Canada's allies were GB, the US, France, and Australia.
