Today we did a WTL on why we went to war with Iraq in 1990. We also went over the Central America map then we discussed Iraq. Yesterday we learned that Saddam Hussein started out poor and started out helping out the poor. All during the 1980’s Iraq was in a stalemate with Iran. People think Iraq won because Saddam said that he didn’t lose because he was still there. Their consequences for losing the war: they left Kuwait, they have a no-fly zone through the northern and southern areas of Iraq to protect the Kurds and Kuwait, and they have weapon inspections performed by the IAEA. Saddam was supposed to let them go anywhere but would kick them out of his country, not let them go places at certain times. Eventually he kicked them out completely and never let them back in. We he did this we got nervous about them making weapons of mass destruction. This is basically the connection between the war in 1990 and 2003. We went to war because the UK told us that Saddam was acquiring WMD’s. Saddam pretended that he had WMD’s to keep Iran on its toes and make their country seem stronger. Iraq interfered with UN inspections and that frustrated the International community, therefore president Clinton called for bombings of military installations. The UN helping makes it seem that the US is less of a bully for starting a war. The invasion of Iraq, Setting up a democracy, the surge, capturing and eventually hanging Saddam, and no longer being in the cities are some of the bigger things that stand out in the Bush administration.
