Today me and Courtney worked on our project.
France:
- how did the treaty of versailies impact them?
- France wanted security out of the treaty beacause they suffered a lot of devestation during the war and needed to repair it's prosperity.
- they also wanted to regain the rich and industrial land of Alsace-Lirraine that Germany took from them from the the Franco-Prussian war of 1871. - what types of government did this country have in the interwar years? (1919-1938)
- they depended on laissez-faire economics.
- this upset people that were for socialists because they felt the government wasn't doing anything.
- the bloc nation did not want to help that poor and lower class.
- the french government thought that it was completely Germany's fault and thought that they should pay france back for all of their war debt.
- raymond poincare was the prime minister from 1922-1924
- the french chamber of deputies expected payments from Germany.
- germans asked for a moratorium poincare had 40,000 troops go to Ruhr in Germany.
- that only cost france more money and didn't get the germans to pay.
- it lead to the draft of the dawes plan so annual payments of repairations were decreased.
- a moderate socialist colation called the Cartel des Gauches replaced the Bloc Nation on May 11 1924.
- the socialists were disorganized and didn't know how to approach the problems with germany so in 1926 Poincare became prime minister again.
- in 1928 Poincare decreed "the franc was to be devalued"
- doing that paid off right away.
- july of 1929 Poincare stepped out of office and france didn't have stability so they went into a "disray" for a few years.
- in the 1930's the ideas of facism and conunism were popular.
- in february 1934 there were riots and problems with police. this caused many deaths.
- in 1936 a leon blum (a jew) became prime minister on june 3rd, 1936.
- Blum wasn't able to keep the economy stable and the "Popular Front government fell apart".
- the economy soon had stability again and increased armaments manufactures.
- france declared war on germany on September 3rd, 1939. how did their leader that lead them throughout WWII come to power?
how did this leader change their country (for the better or worse) prior to WWII?
what were the goals of the leader?
- Georges Clemenceau's belief was that Germany should be brought to her knees so she would never be able to start a war again.
