We watched a movie on the Roaring Twenties and answered a question....What made the 1920's roaring, fun, and exciting? The 1920's are known as the "Jazz Age." Americans enjoyed the high standard of living in the world. We were in the midst of a third industrial revolution. What our country made was also changing. Electrical appliances, automobiles, and motion pictures were becoming more and more popular. Henry Ford made a moving assembly line and cut the time it took to make a car drastically. In 1914, Henry decided to pay his workers five dollars a day. Higher wages were better for businesses. Buying on credit was starting to be more and more popular and a way of like. GM introduced a wide range of cars with different prices that changed each year. The automobile changed the world to a urban nation.More Americans started to live in cities rather than living in the country. People moved to cities in search for better jobs and better living conditions. The automobile allowed the city to expand out into the rural areas. It changed almost every aspect of daily living. Many people believed the car was anti-religious.Their reasoning for this was because instead of people going to church on Sunday morning, they would go out and do things they could not do before the car.Womens lives were changing fast. The 19th ammendment allowed women that were of age to vote. Many women were starting to graduate highschool and moving on the colleges. The number of women that were dating increased. The Flappers were what almost every woman wanted to be. They wore shorts dresses and high heeled shoes. This was what most people think of when they think about the 1920's. The nature of women's work was changing. Women were deciding what products to buy instead of men.The way people advertised was changing. The radio was a new invention that allowed businesses to advertise way easier then just by word. Americans learned that sneaker smell and B.O. could ruin your life. Back in the old days, it took a well-to-do woman hours to get ready to go out in public. The big thing in advertising was to make a woman feel guilty. Advertising for cosmetics were like, "are you pretty enough for your husband", etc.Movies brought fantasy to life. Very small towns even had movie theatres. Young men learned how to kiss by watching movies. How to smoke a cigarette was what some people went to movies for, to learn how. By the 1920's. movies were the most powerful and influencial things. Movie stars were the role models of our societies. Jazz was starting to spread throughout the whole nation. It started in Louisana and moved its way up to Kansas City. African Americans were starting to have more rights. They were starting to believe in their own kind of gods. Many whites were pleased because of the production of jazz spreading. White musicians were starting to take up jazz, transforming American music. The Ku Klux Kan (KKK) was against white catholics, African Americans, and many other groups of people. They would burn crosses and hang African Americans. They had a huge impact on people. Congress passed a law that restriced the number of immigrants into the United States. The law said nothing about the western hemisphere.Sporting events were becoming more and more popular. People started spending their money on going to watch these events. Boxing was very popular. The 1920's were the golden age of sports. Tennis, college football, pro football, baseball, etc. The greatest hero of the century was just a farm boy. No one had flown nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. Lucky Lynde achieved it. Man and machine working as one, flying across the sky.
