Today Mr. Bruns talked about our next blog assignment. Our blog topic is to pick an African American that has effected American or history, because it is black history month. He also showed us how to get to the New Deal test questions on the History page. Sam was the first to go today and his topics were the Reconstruction Finance Corporation(RFC) and the National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB).
RFC
The RFC was passed July 21, 1932 by president at the time Hoover. FDR later became president and continued it. The RFC gave money to small businesses, banks, state governments and they could give out loans to people to give jobs. It basically helped give jobs to the unemployed.
National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB)
Passed on July 5, 1933. This act prohibited unfair labor practices, for example, long hours of working, unsafe conditions at work, and firing people for joining labor unions. Succesful untill 1947 when congress passed the Taft-Hartly Act, which set restrictions on unions. Kelsey went second today. Her two topics are Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) and Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA).
Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC)
Established in early 1933. Most who joined the CCC were unemployed and they were enlisted into a peacearmy. 18 through 26 year old men was the age range of men who joined. The crime rate reduced 55% after men started joining the CCC. The requirements to join were, ages 18-26, unmarried and unemployed, and you had to be a citizen of the U.S. Benefits of the CCC were... the men recieved 30 dollars every month, families recieved 25 dollars per month. The men were offered an education, they learned how to read and write. Over 90% of men participated in educational activities. The CCC built over 97,000 miles of road, over 3 billion trees were planted, kept people out of trouble, it helped the U.S. recover from the Dust Bowl. In 1939 the CCC lost its independance as an agency. The congress funded it for only two more years.
