Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (BUI)
-This was a peace treaty between America and Mexico
-Ended Mexican American War
-The treaty gave the United States much of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, parts of Wyoming and Colorado
-The Mexicans in these areas had the choice of becoming American citizens or returning to Mexico
Annexation of Texas
-President Martin Van Buren refrained from annexing Texas in fear of a war breaking out
-8 years later, President Tyler began to renegotiate with the republic of Texas
-Tyler began by creating the Treaty of Annexation for the future state of Texas
-This caused Mexico to sever their diplomatic relationships to the United States in protest to the Treaty, which the Senate didn’t pass
-Texas became a state on December 29th, 1845
Results of the Annexation of Texas
-Mexico didn’t immediately follow through with their threat of war, but tension between the 2 countries remained
-In November, Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to negotiate the purchase of the disputed land
-After news of skirmishes from Polk, support for America to declare war began to rise
Stephen Austin (BUI)
-Raised in southeastern Connecticut
-Elected to Legislature of Missouri
-Known for being the founder of the Anglo American Texas
-Leader of the Battle of Alamo
-Speaking words of encouragement and hope during the darkest days of the revolution
-Capital city of Texas was named after him
-He never got married or got kids
-Nicknamed “The Father of Texas”
Santa Anna (BUI)
-Rebelled against Mexican government originally
-Mexican president and military general during the Texas Revolution
-Declared himself dictator because Mexico wasn’t ready for a democracy
-Led Mexican troops to Texas to fight against the Republic of Texas
-Made several attempts to regain Texas
-Known to be a cruel and ruthless leader
-Exiled from Mexico
-Later allowed to return to Mexico
-He was involved in many battles
-He was defeated at the battle of San Jacinto
-San Jacinto was only 18 minute battle
-The next day he was taken captive into Texas
-1836-1876: he was constantly in and out of the government (11 times in 40 years)
Davy Crockett (BUI)
-From Tennessee
-Hunter, Sharpshooter
-Served in US House of Representatives for Tennessee
-Moved to Texas once Van Buren was elected President
-Seen as wearing coon skin hat, hunting suit, and rifle
-Arrived at Alamo only a few days before fighting began
-Gave up his life to defend the Alamo
-Ended up being killed by Mexicans
-Leader of the Tennessee Volunteer
