Section 5-1

Cultures Clash on the Prairie.

The plains indians lived on the great plains.

The great plains were a grassland extending throughtout the west central portion of the US.

The four important tribes in the great plains are Dakota, Cheyenne, Sioux, and Comanche.

The indians used every part of the buffalo.

They moved so often they used teepees cause they were easy to put up and take down.

One way they hunted buffalo was to have one indian on horse back with a bow, but the easiest way was to have a group of indians chase them to a cliff.

They never killled more buffalo then they needed.

They believed in many gods, including gods for the sun, moon, stars, and anything else strange to them.

They had ceremonies called pow-wow, which was a celebration to the Great Spirit.

The first horses the indians had were from the spanish. The horses made life easier for indians. Like hunting for example hunting. The horses caused wars because they could travel so much further with horses, so when the Indians of one tribe would trespass on anothers land.

Usually lived in small family groups.

Children were taught life lessons.

Women were taught to sew, cook and decorate moccasins.

The women had to pick berries.

The men had to hunt, protect the tribe and fight battles and make weapons and tools.

Settlers Push Westward

When white settlers came into the Great Plains they pushed the indians farther and farther west.

Whites thought land should be owned and the indians didn't.

In 1858 the finding of gold in Colorado attracted tens of thousands of people.

Cattle became business.

When the indians were forced out of their homeland the cattle and horses flurished the Great Plains.

American settlers learned how to handle large herds of cattle from the Mexicans.

They learned how to round up, rope, brand.

Cowboys werent' needed until the railroads came in.

Farmers were getting mad cause of their crops getting trampled on.

They found a better route called Chisolm Trail. The trail is a major cattle route from San Antonio, Texas through Oklahoma To Kansas.
