Today we had a discussion over the assigned blogs this week. The topics were Al-Qaeda, War in Afghanistan, Taliban, and September 11th. We started by talking about September 11th. I learned that on September 11th four commercial jets were hijacked, two of the jets were crashed into the Twin Towers located at the World Trade Center. Another plane was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The final plane that was hijacked crashed into a field in Shanksville, Virginia. The plane was heading for the Capitol, but the passengers tried to over take the jet and land it safely. Unfortunately the passengers were unable to land it and crashed into a field, but more than likely saved many lives. I also learned that all in all 2993 people were killed in the 9-11 attacks. All of the passengers on the jets died, and many more died from the World Trade Center Collapsing. Another thing that I learned was that on 9-11 Bush was reading to a group of students in Florida, but then was flown all over the country because the Secret Service was trying to protect the president from a possible attack. That is what I learned about 9-11.Next we talked about the Taliban. The Taliban came to power in 1996 and went out of power in 2001. They were the government of Afghanistan and had very strict rules about what women can do. I learned that one of the laws that the Taliban put in place is that women could not go to school and that they they had to be dressed from head to toe. I learned that if they were not dressed from head to toe they would be whipped or beaten severely. Another thing that I learned was that the Taliban is gaining power once again, and are in an alliance with Al-Qaeda. I also learned that Mullah Mohammed Omar is the Taliban's leader.
