Today, August 25, 2009, in U.S. history we continued talking about our blogs that we did over the past week. Today we talked about Exploration and Colonization and about the Revolutionary war. When talking about Exploration and Colonization we said that the first people to make contact with the new world were the Vikings when they found Greenland in the 11th century. Christopher Columbus led an exhibition to what he thought was India, and it was funded by Queen Isabella. Fortunately he did not find the India he found the New World which he called the West Indies. The Treaty of Tordesillas was a line drawn by the pope which was set to keep the Spanish and Portuguese from fighting because they were both Catholic. We also talked about the Spanish conquest of the Inca's and Aztec's. The English's attempts to settle were stopped by the strong Spanish Armada.Next we talked about the Revolutionary War. This war was fought between the British and the united British colonies in North America. The British were aided by hired merecenaries called Hessians from Germany, and the united colonies were aided by the French, Spanish, and Dutch. The war was caused by Taxation without representation. The colonies had no representation in the Parliament. I learned that Loyalists were people in the colonies that still wanted to be loyal to the British. The colonists won the Revolutionary War, the decisive battle was the Battle at Yorktown. The colonists also knew about the land and were willing to use guerilla warfare, this also led to the colonists winning. George Washington was Commander-in-Chief over the colonies Continental Army.I Learned today what the Treaty of Tordesillas was and why the pope made it. That is why in Brazil they speak Portuguese and in the rest of South America they speak Spanish. Today I also learned what Hessians were. Another thing that I did not know before today was why teh English were not able to settle as soon as other countries
