Today Zach Osborn is going to finish the Pacific Front. The bombing of Hiroshima took place on August 6, 1945. The project that researched the atomic bomb was called the Manhatten Project. It was a good place to bomb because it had a lot of factories and it destoryed a lot of things that would have helped Japan in the war. The Japanese tried to evacuate because they intercepted a message and knew an attack was going to happen. The Japanese ended up surrendering on August 15, 1945. The Roosevelt Doctrine said that we could attack anywhere in Axis waters without warning. It was unrestriced submarine warfare. Commerce Raiding was the use of naval forces to destroy the supply lines of an enemy on the open sea, rather than engaging in combat. Some of the major battles were Midway, Coral Sea, Iwo Jima, Guadall Canal, and Philippines. The Battle of Midway was probably the most important because it was a turnig point in the war. Island hopping is going across the ocean by hopping from isand to island. Island hopping was led by Arthur MacArthur.

Now April and Ashley are going to present on the Spying Game. Cryptography was the practice and study of hiding information. It was used during World War II to pass special messages to another country, It would scramble up the letters so only that country could read the message. ULTRA and Magic were two of the main ones Magic was an Allied Machine. It was directed towards Japan and the Allied Powers to break their diplomatic codes. Purple was a Japanese machine. It would take a message and transfer it into a code. The receiving machine could translate the code only under certain settings. Bombe was a British machine that tried to decode German messages. Navajo Code Talkers were Native Americans who served in the U.S Marine Corps. Their main job was to decode secret messages. The messages were sent from Allied people, and they would read it and then send it on to another person. They used the Navajo language which was not very well known. It could not be spoken because the Navajo language was never written down. Klaus Fuchs gave the Soviet Union information from the US and Britain. He was sent to the US to develop the atomic bomb. In 1945 he was claimed to be involved in a spying ring. He denied it until 1950 and later told the truth. He was sentenced for 14 years in prison. He was also stripped of his British Citizenship.
