Today we are continuing to go over Mr. Bruns' powerpoint. Hitler decided to invade France by going through Belgium because of the Maginot Line. The Maginot Line was a concrete barrier that provided defense for the French. Germany was able to capture France because they were not ready to fight. They weren't ready to fight because they thought that they were protected by the Maginot Line. The Vichy Government was led by Marshal Henri Petain. This was the government that Hitler that stay in power in France. They helped round up Frence Jews to give to Hitler. The Free French Underground was led by Charles de Gaulle. They fled to Great Britain.

The Nazi goal was to destroy the Royal Air Force. Germany started to bomb at night, which made the people very fearful because the Germans could not see where they were bombing. They also wanted to attack and destroy the British Navy. Great Britain was aided heavily by the use of the radar and also by a decoding system calle ULTRA. ULTRA was able to decode messages that the Germans were sending to each other. Winston Churchill gave a lot of speeches that were meant to increase the moral of the people. Churchill siad "Never was so much owed by so many to so few" about the Royal Air Force because they saved Great Britain from being attacked by Germany. Herman Goering was the leader of the Luftwaffe and became leader of Germany after Hitler committed suicide.

The Cash and Carry System said that the if the French and British wanted to trade with us, they had to pay upfront and get the goods with there own boats. The Bases for Destroyers said teh United States would give Great Britain old destroyer boats and in return Britain would give us 99 year leases on naval bases. Most of the extermination camps were located in Poland. Germany had no extermination camps in it, but it did have concentration camps.
