Today I continued to research on Muckrakers. I learned that some of the investigations that they did during the Progressive Era led to some acts being passed. Some of the Acts that were passed included the Pure Food and Drugs Act and the Meat Inspection Act, these acts were passed by Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt believed in what the Muckrakers were doing until David Graham Phillips wrote a series of articles in the Cosmopolitan magazine that he called The Treason in the Senate. I learned that these articles included attacks Roosevelt's political allies. Roosevelt responded with a speech where he compared the journalists with a muckraker in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. I also learned that after the speech the investigators did not like being called Muckrakers. Another thing that I learned was that the journalists felt betrayed by Theodore Roosefelt because they had helped him get elected as President.Lincoln Steffens said, "Well, you have put an end to all these journalistic investigations that have made you."Next I looked up more on Lincoln Steffens. Another thing I learned was that one of his major investigations was exposing corruption in local governments. In 1906 he along with Ida Tarbell and Ray Stannard Baker joined forces to establish the American Magazine. I also learned that he continued to write about corruption in the government until 1910.
