Tuesday 1-12-10

Today we watched a movie over the Roaring Twenties. Some things that made the 1920's roaring included...The United States economy was booming because the switch from coal to electricity made it easier to make things, it also made the work day longer. Companies began buying things that the people could buy such as cars. Henry Ford cut the amount of time it took to make a car, two hours. He cut the time by using an assembly line. The wages and workers benfits were getting better, The started things such as payed vacations. Most people could not afford automobiles, so car companies started to let people buy on credit. More people lived in cities beause of better jobs and the promise of a better life. Cities began to build movie theatres and skyscrapers to make the city better. The car changed a lot of American habits such as dating.Women changed a lot. In 1920 the women were granted the right to vote and also started to go to high school and college. Women could also participate in sporting activities. They also wore looser clothing and started to cut their hair. They were called Flappers and went to Speakeasies. The country got electrified during the 1920's, Electricity allowed people to buy new household appliances. Advertising also began to educate Americans about the new products in the United States. Magazines and radio broadcasts made it easier to promote products. People also started to think about hygeine. People could buy clothes in department strores.Movies theatres helped people learn things about what they saw in the movies. The movie industry expanded in the 1920's. Movies were the most popular medium in the United States during this time period. Jazz music also started its way up North. Jazz music was very popular but was also controversial. Jazz drew white people to illegal speakeasies. The KKK did not like Catholics because they thought about The Pope more then their country. By 1923 The KKK controlled three state governments.Sports became more popular. Jack Demsy was the best known fighter of the 1920's. The Roaring Twenties brought sprots hereos such as Babe Ruth. Charles Linburg was the first person to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean.
