Today we continued to present our Chapter 9 Projects.What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?The Sherman Anit-Trust Act, The Clayton Anti-Trust Act, Federal Trade Commission. Before these acts were passed the government had a laissez-faire approach which meant that the government stayed out of the way of the business owners. Today it is the same laws as it was back them.Describe the impact aid organizations had on our countryBefore the Progressive Era their were not very many aid organizations in the United States. The Social gospel was a movement that said we should start helping the needy. It was started by Prodestent and Christian churches. The YMCA was a Christian organization that wanted to bring peace and love to the country. It stands for the Young Mens Christian Association. Today it helps fund organizations across the world and is a big recreation center. The Salvation Army helped feed poor people. It had a soup kitchen where people would get fed soup. Settlement Houses help people in need, but most of them were immigrants. The first settlement house was the Hull House in Chicago. The Mercy Home for Boys and Girls helped abused and homeless children in Chicago.What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?Socialism is an economic system where the government controlled the businesses and wanted the people to become more equal. Socialists wanted everyone to be equal, but the Progressives did not like the idea of Socialism, they thought that it was going too far. Eugene V. Debs was a man that ran for president four times. He was a big believer in Socialism. He thought that capitalism would ruin small countries because a small population would run the country.
