6.2 ContinuedWhat impact did railroads have on the US? (already answered, friday 10/9/09)Why were many people upset with the railroads? The railroads were misusings the land grants the government gave them by selling land to other rail road companies. The rail roads would charge more to farmers because they had to get out their crops. What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads? States would pass laws for how high the rates could be and they'd be equal for everybody. Mon v. Illinois Supreme court said that states can regulate rates, ten years later they said no. Congress came out with the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1887 and it gave the government say about the rates because the ICC wouldn't let states set rates from a train going to one state to another.7.2 The Challenges of UrbanizationUrbanization is the growth of cities, mostly in the northeast and midwest. Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's? Immigrants came in this time. Farmers moved into cities because it was hard, they didn't have a lot of help, and they were in debt. What problems did cities face due to the rapid increase in population? Housing outside of the city they'd have transportation issues, but if they stayed in town then they'd be in small houses with a lot of people and it'd be very unsanitary. It became hard to repair old street cars so there wasn't enough room for how many people moved into cities. Few homes had indoor plumbing so it was hard to have clean water. Sanitation was bad, there was factory smoke, trash, and manure. They let pigs run in the streets to try and have them eat some of the trash. Crime was on the rise, there was so many people that somebody could just take your stuff out of your pockets, and there was hardly any law inforcment. Fire's were on the rise too, there was only volunteer fire fighters and there was a lack of water which made the fires worse and all the houses were made of wood so it was easy to have big fires. Great Chicago fire, fire burnt for 24 hours. San Fransisco fire in 1906 came after an earthquake and it burnt for four days. What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities? Social Gospel Movement, Christians thought they had a responsibility to help improve the times. A settlement house was like a community center where a poor/ immigrant could go to get a start on life. Jane Adamms was the most known for starting everthing.-Breann Lehr
